Tune in with Greg McHenry, Tuesdays 11am-noon on 94.7 The Pulse.
Roads to Recovery, which is now into its sixth year of broadcasting, intends to increase public awareness of what is available in our community, to make living in our community easier, safer, and/or more worthwhile.
Edwina, who has produced many programs, and has been very much the ideas person for many topics we have covered, will handle ANY ideas you may have for appropriate discussion, and your involvement as a participant is encouraged.
Please use the “send program feedback” link below, and we will be in contact in a timely fashion.
The audience target is people of all ages. The program attempts to cover as many groups as possible that are able to help people in our community through their issues. We act as a conduit, only, to get information to people who (possibly) want to take that huge first step to recovery, for whatever the reason.
We talk about these issues in an informal, chatty manner, hoping that we de-mystify them, and inform the audience of relevant contacts to get help towards recovery. We have heard of a number of local people taking note of information they have learnt from the program, and taking that important first step to recovery.
The program goes to air on a weekly basis, when guests mainly drive the format, and the program has a strong focus about making it their program.
Participants have included

Feedback from one of our listeners...
Dear Sir
Congratulations to Greg & the team for yet another great program.
What an amazing, informative, pro-active program this has become, bringing together people from different branches of the 'caring' community, encouraging co-operative networking, & providing information that can bring people to the services that can enrich their lives.
This week's program (25th October 2011) was a fine example of this, and the planned programs for the next few weeks reflect a genuine attempt to give comprehensive cover to issues, with follow-up & linked issues, and being catalyst to bring issues such as Gedda's situation to the table for action.
Greg's dedication, genuine interest in people & passion for making a difference is inspirational.
I hope The Pulse will continue to support the community issues & such dedicated presenters, and maybe consider repeating the program, perhaps in an evening or weekend time-slot , to hopefully help reach more who could benefit from the services or information.
"Well Done" to Greg & the team!
Sincerely
Trish (subscriber)

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome - SIDS
Listen:
| Download
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, or SIDS, is still the major cause of death in infants from 1 month to 1 year of age, with most deaths occurring between 2 and 4 months.
1987 in Australia saw a peak in the number of reported SIDS deaths at just fewer than 600, and there has been a steady decline since then, but there is an ideal target of zero that we are aiming for.
Why has there been such a decrease? We talk with SIDS researcher, Dr Jhodie Duncan, who is a neuroscientist with the Florey Neurosciences Institute.
There are still around 100 SIDS deaths annually, and I chat with Karl & Alex Waddell whose son River Jak Adam died Aged 128 days on the 6th November last year.
You can make donations that will be directed to the Florey Institute for SIDS research, through www.riverfoundation.com.au
Also - Karl will be running in the Great Ocean Road Marathon on 19th May to raise funds - email - alexandkarl@hotmail.com.au

Community Living Assistance Geelong
Listen:

Damien Bernasconi of SalvoConnect and I had a chat over a light lunch about what goes on around Geelong to feed our homeless.
We know that Secondbite a group we chatted with back in July have been collecting food deemed to be wastage from food chains, supermarkets, fruit and veggie shops, caterers, etc. since 2005.
But what happens to the food, where is it distributed?
Damien, who has lots of contacts in this business, organised a bloke called Paul Kimber who tell us a bit about the history of food for the homeless in Geelong.
So he is here with us to chat today about a venue he started quite a while back, and we have a return visit from Vlad Selakovic, who talks to us about a more recent venue that the group First Response has established in Fenwick St.
Kardinia Network, Bellerine Street, provides emergency relief to people in need, food hampers and food vouchers. Limited assistance with furniture. Monday to Friday 9am - 5pm (Wednesday only 9:30am start) (03) 5222 2890.

Gambler's Help
Listen:
| Download
In this program, Steve Levakis from the City of Greater Geelong in Community Development (gaming), and Bec Henderson who is the Coordinator with Barwon Gambler's Help and Saver Plus from Bethany chat with Greg McHenry.
For a small number of people in our community, gambling, specifically the easy access type, (poker machines)is causing a massive problem in our community.
It tears families apart, and the addict needs to be protected against him- or herself.
The people who claim that their clubs would be hurt by measures to limit spending by problem gamblers, are doing so, to the detriment of the entire community.
FORTY per cent of the clubs revenue is generated through problem gambling. Clubs need to service the community, NOT their greed.
Problem gamblers and their families can find help and support on the Gambler's Help line - 1800 858 858, or during business hours, Bethany Community Support Gamblers Help Program Geelong on (03) 5278 8122.

Multiple Sclerosis
Listen:
| Download
Today we talk about living and caring with people I met in the hydrotherapy facility at the . Margot Harpur was diagnosed with MS, i.e. multiple sclerosis, 38 years ago, and her main carer is her husband Rob.
A couple of weeks ago I chatted with Carol Cooke and Mark Sims about the MegaSwim that was to be held at the Bellarine aquatic centre.
This event raises funds for the Go for Gold scholarship.
These scholarships have helped to change the lives of people living with MS in the ACT, NSW and Victoria.
Well it was a great event that raised over $20,000 and one of my guests, Bree-arne Chamley, a scholarship recipient in 2010, performed live at the event on the Saturday evening.
You can email Bree-arne at - brees_acoustics@hotmail.com to get her CD, or Google and follow her trail.
