Sudden Infant Death Syndrome - SIDS
Listen:
| Download
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, or SIDS, is still the major cause of death in infants from 1 month to 1 year of age, with most deaths occurring between 2 and 4 months.
1987 in Australia saw a peak in the number of reported SIDS deaths at just fewer than 600, and there has been a steady decline since then, but there is an ideal target of zero that we are aiming for.
Why has there been such a decrease? We talk with SIDS researcher, Dr Jhodie Duncan, who is a neuroscientist with the Florey Neurosciences Institute.
There are still around 100 SIDS deaths annually, and I chat with Karl & Alex Waddell whose son River Jak Adam died Aged 128 days on the 6th November last year.
You can make donations that will be directed to the Florey Institute for SIDS research, through www.riverfoundation.com.au
Also - Karl will be running in the Great Ocean Road Marathon on 19th May to raise funds - email - alexandkarl@hotmail.com.au

Community Living Assistance Geelong

Damien Bernasconi of SalvoConnect and I had a chat over a light lunch about what goes on around Geelong to feed our homeless.
We know that Secondbite a group we chatted with back in July have been collecting food deemed to be wastage from food chains, supermarkets, fruit and veggie shops, caterers, etc. since 2005.
But what happens to the food, where is it distributed?
Damien, who has lots of contacts in this business, organised a bloke called Paul Kimber who tell us a bit about the history of food for the homeless in Geelong.
So he is here with us to chat today about a venue he started quite a while back, and we have a return visit from Vlad Selakovic, who talks to us about a more recent venue that the group First Response has established in Fenwick St.
Kardinia Network, Bellerine Street, provides emergency relief to people in need, food hampers and food vouchers. Limited assistance with furniture. Monday to Friday 9am - 5pm (Wednesday only 9:30am start) (03) 5222 2890.

Gambler's Help
Listen:

In this program, Steve Levakis from the City of Greater Geelong in Community Development (gaming), and Bec Henderson who is the Coordinator with Barwon Gambler's Help and Saver Plus from Bethany chat with Greg McHenry.
For a small number of people in our community, gambling, specifically the easy access type, (poker machines)is causing a massive problem in our community.
It tears families apart, and the addict needs to be protected against him- or herself.
The people who claim that their clubs would be hurt by measures to limit spending by problem gamblers, are doing so, to the detriment of the entire community.
FORTY per cent of the clubs revenue is generated through problem gambling. Clubs need to service the community, NOT their greed.
Problem gamblers and their families can find help and support on the Gambler's Help line - 1800 858 858, or during business hours, Bethany Community Support Gamblers Help Program Geelong on (03) 5278 8122.

White Ribbon Day
Listen:
| Download
On the afternoon of 6 December 1989, a man walked into the Ecole Polytechnique University in Montreal and massacred 14 of his female classmates.
This act reverberated around the world, and a couple of years later, some men from Toronto decided they had a responsibility to speak out about and work to stop, men's violence against women.
They started an annual awareness day that ran until 1999, when the United Nations General Assembly declared 25 November as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, with a white ribbon as its iconic symbol.
The White Ribbon Campaign is now the largest global male-led movement to stop men's violence against women.
White Ribbon began in Australia in 2003 as part of what is now UN Women, and it formally became a Foundation in 2007.
We learn about services and local activity from Peter Kelly, who is a Health Promotion Officer with Barwon Health, Professor Glenda MacNaughton from the Reclaim the night collective, and Victoria Police Senior Constable Tracey Van Looy from the family violence and Youth liaison unit.

Sexual Assault, We say No!

Violence Against Women - say NO!
That is the message that The G21 Accord to Prevent and End Violence against Women, has as its theme, for a Month of Action that is well into its second week.
This is a topic that has been kept behind closed doors too long, and, sadly, those doors have too often belonged to those closest to us, and not been spoken about openly.
And it has been pretty much the same in our schools.
We didn?t talk about sexual assault or abuse way back when, so it is heartening to us all to find that during this month of awareness about such matters, the message that is going out to our schools through Barwon CASA is:-
Sexual Assault, We say No!
To get the message out there I have Jess Boccia from the Childrens and Youth Program at the Barwon Centre Against Sexual Assault.
And then we will meet her guests, Paul Dawson who is the Assistant Principal North Geelong Secondary College and Detective Senior Sergeant Peter Miller from Geelong Police SOCIT unit.

Young People in Nursing Homes
Listen:

I think it was 1956 when I first met Geraldine Black.
She was one of many children at that time who were stricken with polio, a handful of whom were still able to attend school, and be part of the general community.
I saw her on and off through secondary school, where she also met my fiancée Edwina.
She moved on to nursing, where she at one time took care of one of Edwina?s girls, and married, and became Gedda Kowal.
Eddie and I saw Gedda a few weeks ago with her lifetime friend Rosemary Morgan nee McHugh.
We were at grace McKellar, but Gedda wasn?t nursing, she is being nursed and is now one of many Young People in Nursing Homes and we are young when we are 50-65 year olds too,
Since then she has been mentioned in parliament by Lisa Neville, and Danny Lannen has had a page three article on her in The Addie.
Today, Gedda Kowal is here with Jacqui Pierce, from ARCSupport who is no stranger and is an ambassador promoting NDIS, along with Carolyn Finis who is an ambassador from Building Better Lives.

Reporting paedophile activities.
Listen:
| Download
I retrieved this program of the 9th December 2007, as I feel that it may reach a person still suffering who has been roused by current news, and the imprisonment of Robert Best for his paedophile activities.
The ?Roads? program came about because a letter was sent to all St. Joseph?s College Old Boys by the Principal, Paul Tobias, as directed by the then leader of their Province, Peter Dowling (a christian brother).
The intent of the letter was to direct any student who had been sexually or physically abused to Towards Healing (?TH?) for assistance in seeking ?justice? for what they had been subjected to in their past.
Research revealed ?TH? was NOT held in good light by most people who had been in contact with them: in fact, they seemed to be part of the problem.

In our world today, where we strive for equal rights for all, irrespective of race, colour or creed, we have ignored a group that has difficulties gaining access to services and such.
