Construction of the Geelong Media Education Centre

The Geelong Media Education Centre is being developed at 68-70 Little Ryrie Street in Geelong, to create a dynamic and sustainable community enterprise using media as a platform to provide employment, training and advocacy opportunities for the region, with a focus on young people, people with disabilities and culturally and linguistically diverse participants.

The project includes the redevelopment of the facility entrance and the community hub, the construction of two additional training rooms and a film and television studio, the appointment of two coordinators and the development and implementation of a range of appropriate programs and activities. The existing Pulse community radio station will also be upgraded to enhance its current Broadcast Training opportunities.

Managed by Diversitat, this exciting project has received a development grant from the Federal Dept of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government to assist with the initial establishment. Further funds are being sought from Community Partners to ensure the on –going success of this regional enterprise.

With full construction and fit out scheduled for completion by mid 2009 the Film and Television training courses are already attracting enormous interest from potential students and training organizations.

Reach and Audience Print

94.7 The Pulse – We’re Talking Geelong

Broadcasting 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year!

Our Station Profile

94.7 The Pulse is Geelong’s own Community Radio station.

It is manned by a small staff and a dedicated band of around 80 radio enthusiast volunteers.

Local businesses, community groups, schools, artists, decision makers – in fact almost anyone who lives in Geelong can be heard on 94.7 The Pulse.

For almost 30 years, the Station has provided the Geelong community and its surrounding regions with relevant and informative community radio broadcasting.

Our Broadcast Area and its Population

94.7 The Pulse has a potent bandwidth that reaches Geelong, the Surf Coast, Bellarine Peninsula, Western Melbourne, Mornington Peninsula, Colac, fringes of Ballarat and the many regional centres in between. The population in our broadcast area is estimated at over 500,000 people.

Our Number of Listeners

94.7 The Pulse is the leading Community Radio station in its area. Given the McNair Anderson Survey figures below and our 500,000 potential listeners, we can extrapolate that:

Up to 225,000 listeners, or 45% of people aged over 15, listen to 94.7 The Pulse in a typical month. Up to 120,000 listeners, or 24% of people aged over 15 - listen to 94.7 The Pulse a typical week, and they listen for an average of 7.7 hours.

These figures are based on the McNair National Listener Survey 2007 which found that:

45% of people in Australia aged over 15 listen to community radio in a typical month.

24% of people in Australia aged over 15 listen to community radio in a typical week, listening for an average of 7.7 hours.

The key message that Community Radio can take from the McNair Anderson report on Community Radio is:

"Australia has big ears and very different ears and they are out there.....listening in huge numbers"
