Construction of the Geelong Media Education Centre

The Geelong Media Education Centre is being developed at 68-70 Little Ryrie Street in Geelong, to create a dynamic and sustainable community enterprise using media as a platform to provide employment, training and advocacy opportunities for the region, with a focus on young people, people with disabilities and culturally and linguistically diverse participants.

The project includes the redevelopment of the facility entrance and the community hub, the construction of two additional training rooms and a film and television studio, the appointment of two coordinators and the development and implementation of a range of appropriate programs and activities. The existing Pulse community radio station will also be upgraded to enhance its current Broadcast Training opportunities.

Managed by Diversitat, this exciting project has received a development grant from the Federal Dept of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government to assist with the initial establishment. Further funds are being sought from Community Partners to ensure the on –going success of this regional enterprise.

With full construction and fit out scheduled for completion by mid 2009 the Film and Television training courses are already attracting enormous interest from potential students and training organizations.

History Print
From humble beginnings...

In 1976, public broadcasting began in Australia. The idea for a public radio station in the Geelong region was initiated in November 1984 at a public meeting. Interested Geelong citizens formed a committee to gain support from the community, to muster technical and administrative expertise, to lobby Federal Government support and to fulfill the requirements of a license application.

After several test broadcasts and further lobbying, the committee received an application for a license hearing in early 1988. The station adopted the call sign of 3YYR-FM and commenced full time broadcasting on May 1, 1988.

The station went through a number of name changes before settling as 94.7 The Pulse in 2001. In 2005 Diversitat (formerly known as the Geelong Ethnic Communities Council Inc) assumed responsibility for the management of the station and embarked upon a new era of redevelopment. With a renewed focus on community involvement and the promotion of diversity, the station is entering an new phase in its' development and we invite everyone to join us on the exciting journey.
